Outlook - Recall Messages
This article will guide you through recalling an e-mail. There are limitations to recalling sent e-mail messages and are listed below.

Messages can only be recalled for Outlook for Desktop on Windows Clients only. macOS and Outlook Web Mail in the browser are not supported.
- Please see the recommendation for setting a send delay on your messages. This will allow you time to cancel the message if an error is realized within the provided time to cancel.
- Messages can only be recalled between Office 365 tenants, recipients using Gmail, Yahoo etc. cannot be recalled.
- Messages once opened by the recipient cannot be recalled.
- Messages once recalled will be attempted over a 24-hour period. If the message cannot be retrieved during this time frame a failure notification will be sent.
- Messages sent en-masse IE) 500 recipients or more can take up to 5 minutes to process.
Recalling a Message in Outlook
- Locate the message in your Sent folder in Outlook and Double click it to pop out the message.
- Locate and click Actions in the ribbon menu and select Recall This Message.
- Select Delete unread copies of this message. Check the box to let you know if the action succeeded or failed.
- You will receive an e-mail from Office365reports@microsoft.com with a report of the recall action.
Setting a Delay for Sent Messages
Instructions for macOS Outlook Clients
- Open Outlook and Click Microsoft Outlook in the menu bar in the top left of your display. Altenative you may press command and the comma key simultaneously ( ⌘ + ,).
- Select Settings
- Select Composing
- Set your delay value up to a maximum of 20 seconds
- Once set, after sending a message a pop up will appear in your Outlook at the bottom providing the option to undo and save the message in the Draft folder.
